SYNOPSIS

On November 4th, 1995, after addressing a pro-peace rally in the center of Tel-Aviv Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a young Israeli, Yigal Amir, a law student and supporter of the extreme right. The Road to Rabin Square examines the volatile political climate that existed in Israeli society from the signing of the First Oslo Accords in September of 1993 up until the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.  Telephone interviews with assassin Yigal Amir as well as first-hand interviews with his parents, Knesset members, nationalist and religious leaders, the late Prime Minister Rabin, Leah Rabin and many others contribute to an understanding of the extreme divisions within Israeli society that led up to the murder of the Prime Minister of Israel in November 1995.

The Road to Rabin Square presents for the first time in television a detailed examination of the events that culminated in the assassination. The documentary uncovers the orchestrated incitement campaign, consisted of three components - political, ideological and field-activity - that had been executed by the extreme right in Israel and the USA against the Prime Minister and against his peace initiative. The documentary exposes in details how this institutionalized campaign had been conducted.

The road to Rabin Square offers a troubling portrait of the extreme right wing and the Ultra Orthodox community in Israel. In retrospect, viewing the documentary 10 years after the Prime Minister’s assassination shows how religious-nationalist zealots in Israel had been shaping their country's political course in the last decade by destroying the peace process that Rabin initiated.

Ce documentaire décrit la campagne de haine qui eut lieu en Israël durant les deux années qui précédèrent l‘assassinat de Yitzhak Rabin en 1995. Une enquête en profondeur sur les milieux extrémistes ultra-orthodoxes en Israël et sur leurs liens avec le Likud où on découvre comment ces groupes extrémistes se virent confier par des hommes politiques des actions au grand jour et des opérations sur le terrain. Le film détaille et analyse très précisément les rouages de l‘organisation souterraine mise en place par les ultra-orthodoxes. En suivant la montée en puissance des manifestations à partir de 1993, il révèle aussi le rôle de certains leaders de droite, de Binyamin Netanyahu et Arik Sharon, qui laissèrent agir les extrémistes religieux en leur apportant même un soutien constant et implicite lors de nombreux meetings. Très riche en archives et en témoignages (notamment ceux de la famille de Igal Amir, l‘assassin de Rabin et de Igal lui-même), ce film est à la fois une investigation magistrale sur un aspect mal connu de l‘histoire contemporaine d‘Israël et une analyse politique très précise du fonctionnement et de la stratégie des extrémistes religieux dont la pertinence dépasse le cadre israélien.

Die Dokumentation beschreibt die Haßkampagne, die Israel in den zwei Jahren vor der Ermordung Itzak Rabins im Jahr 1995 beherrschte.

Der Film recherchiert in ultra-orthodoxen Kreisen und deckt deren Verbindungen zur Likud-Partei auf. Er zeigt u.a., daß ein komplexes, gut organisiertes Netz von Gruppierungen im Untergrund agiert und seit den 80er Jahren systematisch Konflikte schürt, die seit dem Osloer Abkommen in eine offene Haßkampagne gegen Rabin ausarteten. Es wird nachgewiesen, daß zahlreiche Rabbiner vor der Ermordung des israelischen Premiers den Talmud-Grundsatz des “Din Rodef“ (über den verdienten Tod eines Verfolgers) im Zusammenhang mit Rabin erwähnten.
Zudem macht die Analyse der Demonstrationen, die ab 1993 an Intensität zunahmen, auch die Rolle bestimmter rechter Politiker wie Benjamin Netanjahu deutlich. Diese ließen den religiösen Extremisten auf zahlreichen Versammlungen freie Hand oder leisteten ihnen durch ihre konstante Unterstützung und durch ihre indirekte Billigung sogar Vorschub.
Die letzte Massendemonstration, die einen Monat vor Rabins Ermordung stattfand, ist in dieser Hinsicht besonders aufschlußreich: Die Aufnahmen zeigen Netanjahu, die Menge grüßend. Die Demonstranten grölen “Nieder mit Rabin“ und schwenken Transparente, auf denen eine Collage von Himmler in Nazi-Uniform mit Rabins Gesicht zu sehen ist, dessen Augen ausgestochen sind.
Der Film ist eine meisterhafte, mit zahlreichen Quellen (Archivmaterial und Zeugenaussagen, insbesondere von Familienmitgliedern des Rabin-Mörders Igal Amir und von Igal selbst) belegte Dokumentation über einen wenig bekannten Aspekt israelischer Zeitgeschichte. Die genaue politische Analyse der radikal-religiösen Bewegungen, ihrer Funktionsweise und Strategie, hat auch über den israelischen Rahmen hinaus Gültigkeit.

The Road to Rabin Square was broadcast in Israel by Channel Two on May 2, 1997, after ultra-right wing groups made an unsuccessful attempt to have it banned by the supreme court. More then one third of Israel's homes tuned in on the programme; The rating was 36.1%, the highest for a documentary since TV broadcasting had started.

The documentary was aired by TV channels in France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Canada and Israel. Arte (German-French Satellite TV) screened it twice, in 1998 and 2004.

June 1997: "For Israelis, the film is a long-overdue attempt to come to terms with violent forces in their own society. Punctuated by haunting choral music and a snare drum's relentless rat-a-tat-tat, the documentary features excerpts from an exclusive phone interview with assassin Yigal Amir, conducted from his parents' suburban Tel Aviv home, and a dramatization of Amir's movements on the day of the shooting. It also contains footage of right-wing protests that had never before been seen inside Israel, even though they were familiar to some viewers abroad. Director Michael Karpin is a veteran television journalist who blames his profession for the downplaying of the extremist threat. Now, he says, 'the population is ready to deal with the subject. The whole story of the assassination was forgotten very quickly ... one of the reasons why we produced the film was to bring the story back in front of the public.''

May 12, 1996: "Michael Karpin builds a meticulous and convincing argument that there was an organized 'campaign of incitement' designed to encourage the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. Last year, a third of Israel's population tuned into the broadcast of The Road to Rabin Square. But not before several right-wing groups went to court in an effort to have the film banned.

En novembre 1995, Ygal Amir, un jeune étudiant religieux, tuait le premier ministre israélien qui avait reçu, avec Yasser Arafat, le prix Nobel de la paix pour la signature des accords d’Oslo. Aussitôt arrêté, l’étudiant revendiquait son acte. Impossible pour le journaliste israélien de voir dans cet assassinat l’acte isolé d’un illuminé. Il se tourne donc vers les milieux extrémistes ultra-orthodoxes, leurs liens - informels - avec le Likoud, et analyse le rôle de certains leaders de droite qui laissent faire, ou acquiescent, des manifestations qui réclament la mort d’Yitzakh Rabin. Als im Mai 1997 eine TV-Dokumentation des israelischen Starjournalisten Michael Karpin Motive und Hintergründe zum Rabin-Mord beleuchtete, waren die Straßen in Tel Aviv menschenleer. Fast die ganze Nation hatte sich vor dem Fernseher versammelt, um eine Reportage zu sehen, die in bis dahin nie gezeigter Detailfülle alle Stationen einer verheerenden politischen Entwicklung rekonstruierte, an deren Ende der Tod des Jitzhak Rabin stand.
Im Vorfeld der Sendung hatte es von konservativer bis rechtsextremer Seite zahlreiche Versuche gegeben, die Ausstrahlung der TV-Dokumentation auf juristischem Wege zu verhindern. Erst der oberste Gerichtshof des Landes gab grünes Licht. Nun liegt das Material, das der Sendung zugrunde lag, in Buchform vor. Und die Brisanz läßt verstehen, warum Teile des politischen Establishments geradezu hysterisch auf den Beitrag reagiert hatten.

This powerful documentary directed by veteran Israeli television journalist Michael Karpin, brings to light the deliberate and coordinated campaign of public incitement that culminated in the assassination of Israel's Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Presented here in its complete 90 min., feature-length version, The Road To Rabin Square documents the links tying prominent politicians in the Likud bloc of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and national religious parties, to a loose-knit organization of militant right-wing groups called Action Headquarters ­ which orchestrated the vicious campaign of Rabin-bashing. Featuring excerpts from an exclusive interview with assassin Yigal Amir, the film furnishes full details on the campaign's organizational structure and also reveals the identities of its guiding lights, which included militant rabbis, leading politicians and millionaire philanthropists. First broadcast in Israel earlier this year, after right-wing groups made an unsuccessful effort to have it banned, one third of Israel's homes tuned in on the programme, prompting political observers to speculate that showing it before last years' election might well have tilted the outcome in favour of Rabin's successor, Shimon Peres.

“On Wednesday, October 27, 2004, Rabin Day was commemorated in our School. 9-11 graders watched the documentary The Road to Rabin’s Square, which described the incitement that led to his murder. After the movie, High School Principal Joyce Raynor talked about how history repeats itself. And how the incitement in Israel today is similar to what happened in Rabin’s days. Dr. Raynor also made reference to Cory Booker’s talk during the L’Mad induction the previous week. She said that it is up to each of us to make a difference and change what we feel should be changed”.

Elle dévoile une nébuleuse complexe mais très organisée, menant depuis les années 1980 une "stratégie de la tension" qui a culminé avec la violente cabale contre Yitzhak Rabin à partir des accords d'Oslo. Elle explore les liens informels entre le Likoud et ces groupes extrémistes, notamment les adeptes du rabbin Meir Kahane, qui se sont vu confier des "actions" par certains hommes politiques. En suivant la montée en puissance des manifestations à partir de 1993, on découvre le rôle de certains leaders de droite, de Benyamin Netanyahou à Ariel Sharon, qui laissèrent agir les extrémistes religieux, leur apportant même un soutien implicite lors de nombreux meetings. On prend mieux conscience de l'"autisme" dans lequel ils vivent et de l'influence qu'ont sur eux ces rabbins qui évoquèrent, à propos de Rabin, le rin rodef - principe du Talmud s'appliquant à un persécuteur qui mérite la mort. Trois étudiants en religion avouèrent pendant l'enquête qu'un rabbin leur avait dit que cette loi s'appliquait à Rabin et qu'il serait prêt à le supprimer. Ils ont tué Rabin est à la fois une investigation magistrale sur un aspect mal connu de l'histoire contemporaine d'Israël et une analyse pertinente du fonctionnement des extrémistes religieux, qui dépasse le cadre israélien.
